Description

The Rapier missile system has proven to be one of the most effective of its type and as such has since its introduction in 1971. It started life as a towed system and proved highly effective in the Falklands conflict. So effective that it quickly replaced other systems. It was later developed onto a Tracked Rapier (see my other models).

The Warrior has become a stalwart of the British Army serving all over the globe so it was reasonable to propose combining theses two systems. Although only an Idea I have designed and printed a kit conversion to turn a Warrior model into a Warrior SAM in a combination of plastic and resin printed parts. This is the latest addition to my ever growing range of 3d printed models, kits and conversions.- see my other listings.

Notes on the conversion by Dennis Lunn who built and provided the pictures shown:
Soon after the Warrior APC, also known as Mechanised Infantry Combat Vehicle (MICV)

was announced in 1985 several Variants on the basic chassis were also announced. These included

the REME Repair Variant, the REME Repair and Recovery Variant and the Battery Commander’s

Vehicle. These all eventually were built and deployed with the British Army. There were several

other Variants that did not leave the drawing board however; these included a 105mm Gun Turret,

and Anti-Aircraft 30mm Gun Turret and a Mortar Carrier. Another Variant which did not appear

was the Warrior Surface to Air Missile Vehicle. This was a basic Warrior chassis with the top rear

part of the hull removed and a platform to mount a Rapier Missile Launcher installed. The Rapier

Launcher from the Tracked Rapier System was to have been installed on this platform. This is the

subject of this kit.

A suitable Warrior kit is required to complete the model. The instructions show where to cut

the hull top of the donor kit (in this case a 1/35 Academy Warrior). If care is taken to cut the hull

top square and parallel as shown on the instructions then no problems in mounting the replacement

platform should be encountered. The Rapier Launcher is a straightforward build of the parts used in

the Dragonbadger Tracked Rapier kit. It might be easier however to paint the model in two stages,

the finished hull and then the Launcher.
